Roma

1 hour Trips
If its the beach scene that your after head just under and hour west to Fiumicino where there is a gorgeous beach that has black sand, due to the high iron content. Here you can experience some of the best seafood restaurants in the world. This town mostly known as a fishing town often times is an excape for the people of Rome during the tourist months, so we warn that many dont like to be bothered. Head just over an hour north to Viterbo and see some the ancient ruins that have been rebuil upon. Be sure to see the palace of the popes as well as the Fontana grande.

1.5+ Trips
Head south to Naples just a short 2 hour trip down the boarder of italy. Naples is currently the most catholic city in the world, holding almost 450 different churches. Taking a trip to Naples might have to be an overnight stay, as the beaches as well as the architecture demand a few days of viewing. Their art museums contain some of the greatest work produced by both Raphael as well as titian. I do not dare to list the different churches that can be viewed as i fear it might take to much time to type them all down. I suggest walking the town and walking the beach and enjoying all that Naples has to offer. If you are traveling from Rome, i suggest putting yourself up for one night, at least, in Naples. There is no bad time to travel to Naples, as their average temperature runs anywhere from 46 degrees in january to 80 in July.
